Go on… ask me why I was late collecting the children yesterday!

You know how we all receive those emails stating that perceptions of those living overseas of Australia are of kangaroos hopping down the main street? Well, it happened to me yesterday on our street. And of course it was one of the few times I DIDN’T have my phone with me to click off a couple of pics as proof!

There I was, the car just gathering speed to climb up the hill to meet the main road and voila, two lovely big grey kangaroos were sitting on the road, giving me the look that said, “do you mind, we were here first?” The best part was that there were no cars behind me so I could sit and watch in wonder as they simply sat in the middle of the road before eventually hopping up the hill.

I told the children on our way  home so we had a bit of an investigate to see where they possibly could have gone. I have seen them before hopping through the bush beside our house but once they cross the road it is a bit of a drop from the footpath down to the bush below which is probably why we don’t see them much in our “urban rain forest”.

Each day I give thanks for our little “urban rain forest” – there’s the obvious delight of having no immediate neighbours but more importantly we have so many different birds visiting, all having their particular “time slot” during the day. The morning begins with the Cat Bird – I’m sure there is another name but it tells you what sound this bird makes – these love the rising sun. Then along come the Parakeets, followed by the Whip Birds, then off and on during the day is the chorus of kookaburras having a chuckle, along with many others I have yet to learn their names. I love it!

But back to business, let’s bid a Fond Farewell to Colour #25 – Close to Cocoa. This was the first colour to run out when Stampin’ Up! announced it’s retirement. No surprise there as it is a beautiful rich colour without being overly dense hence the reason I didn’t do very much at all to this card. Dry Embossing and Layering… so simple, too easy!

Fond Farewell… Colour #6

Wow, where does the day go? Unbelievably we were at school nice and early this morning, and even with a chat to one teacher, a drop-off at another class room, and an exchange of library books, I will still down into the studio with my pot of coffee by 9am… man, I was impressed!

I was even more impressed with the fact that I was able to work right through until I needed to head back to school. I ticked off what I had to in the morning, then I needed a card and even this  I managed a head start on. I know, I know… shock horror, but wait there’s more. The biggest pot of soup in simmering on the stove whilst containers of curry and strog are sitting in the fridge, and Donald’s birthday cake is in the pantry. Oh, and we had chocolate muffins for supper.

But dang it, I fell asleep then before I could tell you about the Fond Farewell to Colour #6 – Taken with Teal. This is a very in your face colour but it is gorgeous. Just so happens I chose this colour with one of my cards last month for my Technique class which was water-colouring, sponging and reverse sponging. This card was water-colouring.

For the sponging and reverse sponging I did almost the same card so the full effect of these different techniques could be appreciated. Now, I don’t deny for a moment that in comparison to what else is out there, these cards are a tad simplistic but when I was designing the three of these cards I felt it better to focus on the actual technique rather then how evolved it all could become. This was left to the individual.

So on saying that… the sun rose…

But wait… we have one more day!

Oh glory, I was so accustomed to Stampin’ Up! and their  deal of the week starting on a Wednesday and finishing on Tuesday night that I automatically wrote that last night without realising that next Wednesday is the last day of June and as such will be the closing day for deal of the week instead of the usual Tuesday. Works MUCH better for me so hope it does for you also!!!

Today is bit of a blur as I had both children home with nasty coughs, fortunately though yesterday was a  different case with the “Card Crusaders” I meet with fortnightly. We were all set the challenge of demonstrating a card using any technique we liked. As if my head wasn’t hurting enough this  last week, I then had to decide on one technique amongst the hundreds out there… yeah right!

Actually it wasn’t such a hard decision as whenever I think of techniques I always think of embossing, and heat embossing at that. Anything to do with heat embossing is my idea of a good time so I went with the resist embossing technique as I’ve seen some truly inspiring work of late which I wanted to have a bit of an Inkee Fiddling with myself.

The small difference between simply heat embossing and the resist embossing technique is that you stamp your chosen image with Versamark for heat embossing with your preferred embossing powder. In this instance I’ve chosen clear embossing powder for this card as I wanted the background image I had stamped to show through the embossing.  

BUT…  Rich Razzleberry and Old Olive were then sponged over the image although I’ve not done this very heavily this time as once again I wanted the stamped background image just peaking through. Once sponged the image had a quick wipe over with a paper towel to remove any ink on the embossed image.

On assembling the card it was obvious that even though the kraft cardstock worked for this card it simply wasn’t enough so with the Versamark I stamped that beautiful vines stamp found in the Vintage Vogue set all over the background. By using the Versamark it  gives the image that wonderful watermark appearance.

Of course I did have something very different in mind when I started but it simply wasn’t coming together so next week I may attempt that one again… maybe!

Dang Cat!

Fergus, our cheeky fur-ball, has a tendency of starting up the printer or scanner whilst on his way to the window to obtain the best vantage point of the front garden. It’s not unusual to see numerous blank pieces of paper sitting in the out tray after one of his ventures.

But in this instance his nimble claws published this picture without as much as a  how do you do… and I’m not even going to mention that he’s now sitting on my chest as I’m typing this… dang cat! What Fergus failed to mention was that this was June’s Off-the-Page class…

This month was going to be a mini scrapbook but once I saw this wonderful card holder designed by the very talented Christine Healey (SUD) I instantly knew that this would be something that could be used many times over as this folder holds three cards and envelopes comfortably. Just perfect as a gift!

For this set I used the Cottage Wall DSP and the Vintage Vogue stamp set and Very Vintage Wheel. All these are available in the current Autumn-Winter Catalogue. Lovin’ the Pastels!

This weeks Technique classes had me really working outside of my comfort zone by working with pastels. As I’ve mentioned before, if it hadn’t been for my initial starter kit, there would have been no way I would have bought these chalks… but goodness, oh how glad I have them now!

Initially I didn’t know where to start so I did some surfing whereby I came across a tutorial by a very talented lady in San Jose by the name of Elaine Schader. I was wanting to highlight the technique of  making the pastels “pop”. I so like what she did I couldn’t help myself but CASE it. If I do say so myself, I really do like this card, what do you think?

The next technique was to sponge the colours directly onto the card-stock then erase what you want to create your desired effect. In this card I chose to create a lattice effect by putting my work under the arm on my Stampin’ Up cutter, then simply ran the eraser down where the blade would normally go. Made even lines that much easier!  Ithen combined this with the Level 2 Hostess Set from the Autumn-Winter Catty, Asian Artistry, which I think compliments it perfectly!


Which leaves me with the third style within this technique which was to use the blender pens to pick up the pastel then colour the image that I’d stamped in black StazOn. Once again I was able to utilise my current “favourite” stamp set – Dreams du Jour… what can I say, I’m totally besotted with this set just at the moment!

What I did to the background was to stamp in Versamark  a butterfly randamly over the cardstock then daube with same colour as the cardstock. Which I think is Apricot Appeal but when I foolishly take photos of a night it is sometimes difficult to tell!

And  hey, I even had a go at doing a ribbon twist rose but I admit now, one requires more work on that technique!
